Bentonite is a clay mineral with a high water absorbing capacity.  When water 
is absorbed is swells up to a few times the original volume.  In this 
conditions it has a very low permeability. That way in geosynthetics it can 
be used as a self healing system for the sealing of dumping grounds. If you 
want to know more about this latter subject, mail my colleague who is doing 
research on this matter.
