Tom,
If the boundry nails are between 2x plates, the shear transfer is =
inadquate at the panel edge. However, I believe that the transfer is =
maintained if the panel edge is nailed to the lower plate (2x). If the =
lapped plates are nailed in accordance with the UBC nailing table, then =
there should be sufficient drag in the combined members. At any rate, =
the plate connections (lap splice and field nailing) should be check, =
regardless, for high capacity walls to determine if additional straping =
would be required.
With that said, the weak link would then be the connection of the =
blocking or rim joist to the top of the double spliced plate and finally =
the boundary nailing from the horizontal diaphragm.=20
I realize that this sounds elementary, but I interpreted your comments =
to question the shear transfer in the lower chord of the lapped plate.
