     Any thoughts on the best way to use metal stud framing as shear =
walls=20
     when the architect will not permit the use of plywood in a =
production=20
     facility tenant improvement?
    =20
     The interior metal stud walls will be supporting a utility grid=20
     (mostly HVAC, conduit, lighting, and ceiling) weighing about 30 psf =

     maximum, so the earthquake loads will be small. I've been =
considering=20
     the use of metal strap x-bracing, sheet metal screwed to the=20
     individual studs, and designing the straps as "structural steel"=20
     members.
    =20
     Thanx,

Rick, I have seen metal stud walls designed as braced frames (as you =
indicated in your post). I'm not sure if there is sufficient data =
available for testing on wall deflection when designed as a brace frame. =
In my area, I found that there is not sufficient design money available =
to analyize these walls since the project is generally very low budget =
and the studs vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
There is some data available from APA regarding allowable shear values =
on plywood sheathed metal stud walls and also some data from HUD. =
Testing for wall drift on plywood stud walls has not been completed as =
yet (as far as I know) and therefore we seem restricted to published =
design values from HUD or APA.
Hope some of this leads you in the right direction.
