------ =_NextPart_000_01BC44FC.1BBAB700 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Perhaps my word choice (using "lucky to pass..") was poorly choosen. = Possibly I should have stated "fortunate enough" or possibly I should = just pull my foot out of my mouth and let this one pass. My apologies to those I offended. Behind my comments were my concerns = that the level of questioned asked would not reflect the applications = that I use 99% of the time on a daily basis in a small private practice. = Many issues tested on prevous SE exams had to with area's of expertise = that are specific to the SE license rather than the broader based work = done by the CE (under existing licensing). I am sure that each of us has = an area of engineering that we are either weak in or have not practiced = in so long that we are not current as to the appropriate design methods. = We can either pass up the work (which I tend to do), accept the work and = sub-contract to a more knowledgable engineer, or fly by the seat of our = pants and hope we haven't made any mistakes learning along the way. Not intending to drag this issue into the ground (which has already = been done), I contend that I will never practice outside of the = guidlines that I am already licensed to practice. Our continuing = education will soon be a matter of fact rather than choice. I have no = desire to lower my already paultry income to sub-standard levels (and it = would not take much) to study for the exam and try to learn area's of = design that I will not use. It is not an issue of "what happens if the = opportunity arises for me to use this previously unknown knowledge", I = would still decline the work based upon my inexperience rather than my = lack of knowledge. Not to further justify my feelings, but I don't believe I would be able = to pass the exam. I don't work well under extreme time constraints = (maybe that's why I collect so paultry a fee), and I don't believe that = the ability to correctly answer an exam question is a measure of an = individuals ability to practice. Recently (within the last two weeks) I = spoke to four engineers who are SE's and have never designed a steel, = masonry or concrete structure. They came out of other industries that = most of us would not even recognize in our discussions - Nuclear, = Aerospace or simply advance degrees. These individuals posess the SE = designation and are designing only residential remodels and custom = homes. Unlike me, these are the only area's that they feel qualified - = regardless of the results of their exams. If or when I pass the exam - I believe that I won't have the same = opinion of my accomplishment as most of the SE's. Possibly due to my age = and my pessimissm!=20 Finally, Jeff, your last comment " I think you should take the exam, I = know you'd prepare properly, and the profession would benefit with = someone of your ability using the title of Structural Engineer." can be = taken as a backhanded compliment. I know what you meant, but I can also = interpret it as indicating that I have nothing to offer the profession = (or that CE's are not part of the Profession) unless or until I past the = test. I do take offense to this - especially since most of you have a = feel for my abilities based upon the level of conversation that we have. "Can't we all just be friends".... Jeff, no real offense taken, keep the debates alive! Respectfully, Dennis ------ =_NextPart_000_01BC44FC.1BBAB700 Content-Type: application/ms-tnef Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
