Complaining to the SEAOC Boards (and Committee Chairs) is like preaching =
to
the choir. Instead of targeting SEAOC and the others you list, might I
suggest becoming involved in committee work and creatively helping to =
make
the needed changes.=20

Carl Sramek, S.E. : - )=20

[Dennis S. Wish PE] Carl, I can't disagree with you more on this =
subject. First, I have been on committees - I was a member of the old =
Hazardous Building Committee for almost three years before the UCBC =
Chapter 1 Appendix 1 was published. I have a tremendous respect for each =
and every engineer that participates with the committees. However, I =
moved to the desert almost four years ago and the closes committee is =
three hours away (six during rush hour).=20
I am in the process of writing an editorial for Online regarding this =
issue. Originally, I thought to go in and blast my way through the board =
of directors until I realized that this is not where the problem lies. =
The problem lies in the lap of each and every member and non-member that =
practices in the area of structural engineering.=20
Sure there are politics, cliques etc., that exist in the ranks of SEA, =
but remember too, that this small community of active volunteers have =
been attending and participating form many many years and therefore =
deserve to step up into their positions. However, they must remember =
that they are representative of the professional community, not the =
local free thinker that walks in with a new original idea that they want =
to shove down the throats of the rest of the community.=20
The engineering community now has a platform (a soap box per se) for =
those of us that want to express a voice in the work of each committee =
OR collectively express common concerns for the advancment or the =
structural engineering community. The power to change laws and codes =
still comes from within the community. It is now possible for more =
engineers to be heard, to unite efforts and to present the consensus of =
the majority of the "opinionated" community to our boards and committees =
to delegate change.
Gosh, when I sit back and see the power before us, I get all tingely.=20
Carl, we can make a difference. I received a copy of a letter from the =
SEAOSC board today that demonstrates their acknowledgement of the sucess =
of the Internet and of the its power to draw comments and unite =
engineers from around the world. I believe that the boards and chairs =
are ready to listen to what the community has to offer.
I'll step down now and give someone else a chance. I have only one more =
comment - demand it you will. The committess must begin assimilating =
their work into the community via the internet, so that each and every =
one of us knows and understands the directions that they are taking. =
This is the only way that we help better the future advancement of our =
codes.

Sincerely,
Dennis Wish PE
