In intermixing of two materials, the stiffer member will take most of
the load.  This could lead to a most undesirable situation.

As was stated in another post, GLB widths are narrower than the widths
of sawn lumber because of the finishing operations.  I would suppose
that a GLB made up of 2X8's and split could be finished to 3-1/2" and
a GLB made up of 2X12's and split could be finished to 5-1/2", but
would it be worth it?
