Actually, Section 2211.8.5 of the '94 UBC allows you to ignore Section
2211.8.2 (the 70% compression requirement) for one and two story buildings
and roofs.  Notwithstanding that, I rarely use rod bracing, or any other
tension only bracing because the performance, as shown in the Northridge
earthquake is generally poor, and the failure mode is worse.
