The *big* hole in the sample policy that I reviewed was that the *insured* 
was to defend him/herself up to the limits of the deductible, *then* the 
insurer would *look* at the claim and **then decide** if they would take over 
defense of the claim.

You would never know if you are insured or not until the insurer decides 
whether to take over the defense of the claim.  It is much better to go 
"bare" --- at least you, and the potential litigant, knows what your status 
is.
