In response to Tom Long's post inquiring about using his structural slab on
grade as a tie beam system to restrain the tops of caissons.

IMHO the intent of the code is met by integral tie beams (e.g.,
appropriately tied additional bars connecting caisson tops but cast into the
slab, with or without local thicknening).  I do not however think it a good
idea to simply assume that that slab on grade, designed to span between
columns in order to address his expansive soil problem, will do the job of
restraining the caissons as well without additional reinforcement.  Add the
tension bars.  It won't cost very much and may prevent damage when the thing
gets shaken some day.
