Hm-m-m. Interesting! When I was doing graduate work, a fellow graduate
student had an engineering handbook published by the U. S. Military Academy
in 1848. In the introduction, the authors *guaranteed* that if the
procedures specified in the handbook were followed, then a safe, efficient,
and economical structure will result. They also added the comment, "However,
some young upstarts are trying to apply mathematics to engineering --- It
will never work!"
