To: SEAOSC Member Under the State University voluntary structural retrofit program for at risk state owned buildings, the Visual Arts Complex at Cal State University at San Bernardino is undergoing a major seismic upgrade of steel beam-column joints. The complex consists of a group of four welded steel moment frame structures ranging up to three stories. The buildings were under construction during the Northridge earthquake but suffered no damage. The construction schedule did not allowed the original design professional team to review the beam-column joint design for possible upgrade during the remaining construction period then. The structural engineer of record on the retrofit project, Dr. Lauren Carpenter of Wong Hobach Lau, selected the Dog-bone Method on this project. The General Contractor on this project is Mallcraft, Altadena. The construction is a fast track 90-days duration during the summer months. Members who are interested to observe the on-going structural repair work can send a fax to James Lai at (818)790-0279 or e-mail jslaicse(--nospam--at)earthlink.net. If sufficient number of members are interested, arrangement will be made to organize a field trip for SEAOSC members on a Friday afternoon between 1:00 to 3:00 on August 28. Please bring your own hard hat and working boots for safety requirement.
