Project Impact: Building a Disaster Resistant Community

A free, interactive Satellite Videoconference Presented by:

American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
          and
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

Thursday, October 29, 1998
     12 Noon - 2 PM Eastern
     11 AM - 1 PM Central
     10 AM - 12 Noon Mountain
     9 AM - 11 AM Pacific

Lives can be saved, damage to property reduced and economic recovery from
disaster accelerated by taking action BEFORE the waters flow, the winds howl,
the fires rage, or the ground shakes. Project Impact seeks to change the way
America deals with natural disasters. The goal of Project Impact is to bring
together community leaders, citizens, and businesses to mitigate the impacts
of natural disasters before they happen. Sponsored by ASCE and FEMA, this
two-hour satellite videoconference will examine the many benefits of Project
Impact and discuss the role design professionals can play in building disaster
resistant communities.

The program will feature:
An overview of Project Impact by FEMA Director James Lee Witt (videotaped
at the 1998 ASCE Annual Convention)
Leading ASCE members discussing the role that civil engineers can play in
mitigating the impacts of earthquakes and winds
Representatives from Pilot Project Impact Communities discussing their
actual experiences with Project Impact and actions their communities have
taken to mitigate the impacts of floods.

The program will be broadcast live to more than 15,000 downlink sites on
FEMA's Emergency Education Network (EENET). The FEMA downlink sites include
local colleges and universities, libraries, police and fire stations, National
Guard sites, and emergency management offices. Please contact the local
emergency manager in your community if you need information on the downlink
site that is closest to your home or office.
