Dennis,

Although you can get the statics to work on knee braces and the tube steel
option at the base, there's something else to consider. Wood, by it's nature,
will shrink and crack especially when exposed in extereme conditions (i.e.
patio trellis type shade devices in Valencia in the summertime). When this
occurs, the bolted connections will become loose which will result in
unaccounted for joint displacements. I suggest the use of lags which hold
tight (but predrill first to prevent wood splitting which defeats the
purpose).
