Re: Two way slab designed as one way

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]

A slab does not know that it was designed as a one-way slab, the behavior
will be determined by proportion. If the slab support proportions and
rigidity are nearly equal, the slab will act in a two way manner. Being
designed and reinforced for one way action will ensure the slab will not
"fail", but there will definitely be excessive cracking as the slab
attempts to behave in the most natural manner first. Even if the
proportions are 4 to 1, a definite one way slab, good detailing dictates
additional reinforcing at the corners to eliminate cracking due to
localized two way behavior at the corners due to restraint conditions.
