RE: earthquake intensity classification

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]
FYI in California, the following was recently published by the US Geological
Survey, California Division of Mines and Geology and CalTech/Pasadena on the
Trinet Web Page http://www.trinet.org/shake.html. I left the tabs out so
you'll have to reformat it or just view it on the net:

INTENSITY ACCELERATION (%g) VELOCITY (cm/s) SHAKING DAMAGE

I < 0.9 < 0.7 Not Felt None
II-III 0.9 - 3.1 0.7 - 2.7 Weak None
IV 3.1 - 5.8 2.7 - 5.3 Light None
V 5.8 - 10 5.3 - 10 Moderate Very light
VI 10 - 20 10 - 20 Strong Light
VII 20 - 37 20 - 38 Very Strong Moderate
VIII 37 - 68 38 - 73 Severe Moderate to Heavy
IX 68 - 133 73 - 140 Violent Heavy
X+ > 133 > 140 Extreme Very Heavy
