RE: gauge of material

For light gage steel, the industry is moving away from gages and toward 
specifying either uncoated mil thickness or mm thickness. There's not an ASTM 
standard for gages (as far as I know), so specifying gages CAN get you into 
trouble, although I have not experienced any problem in the past. Our firm is 
now specifying uncoated mil thicknesses instead of gages based on the 
recommendations of AISI and LGSEA.

Also, because the technology has advanced to allow mills to roll steel to 
small tolerances, most light gage mills roll their shapes to the small side 
of the allowable tolerance. This is happening in the cold-formed steel tube 
industry as well.

btw: does anyone know the origins of gage #s?  seems like i had heard that
it had to do with the number of plies required to develope a given
thickness?  same way with wire gages . . . number of strands that could fit
through a refernce circle?  just a curiosity thing . . .
