Re: Masonry Expansion Joints

Brad -
The Corps has(had?) a detail for this type of situation within their Masonry
TM(5-809-3). In lieu of extending the C.J. vertically up from the corner of
the M.O., the C.J. is offset(i.e., it extends horizontally along the lintel
bearing length) and then continues vertically up at the lintel end. Along the
bearing length, a slip plane is provided(smooth copper, etc.). The idea(I
suppose) is with an eight inch bearing length along this plane, thermal
expansion(or movement) will not be a problem.
