RE: Fixed base timber column

I've used this detail here in the desert where the column is sure to stay
relatively dry. However, I still used a silicon caulking around the column
to finish off the connection to add to the protection. I would also
recommend using a preservative on the base of the column to gain additional
life. I have done this with fence posts embedded into our sandy soil and
after five years, in an area with sprinklers and drip irrigation, they hold
up very well.
I also used this detail at a Trellis  construction for a local Starbucks
Coffee - where the architect did not want to use a steel column (even though
it was surrounded by a stucco column). At the suggestion of one of our list
members I left the bottom of the sleeve free of obstruction to allow for
water to seep out should it get trapped or percolated up through the

A 10x10 is 9.5" x 9.5".  Cast a TS 10 x 10 x 1/4 in the foundation, flush
the highest top of concrete elevationt that you desire.  This will provide
clear.  Stick the 10 x 10 in the TS.
