When you notch the top of the Parallam beam you are practically lowering the
neutral axis of the beam section, thus having a smaller beam section. Do not
count on the 2x4's to transfer compression stresses as they will shrink no
matter how perfectly tight they may sit in the notches.

If you have room next to the ends of the Parallam beam, you may cantilever
couple of rafters or so at each end, then hang a beam parallel to the
Parallam. Just a thought.
