You might want to look at "Metal Rail Manual" by NOMMA (National Ornamental
& Miscellaneous Metals Association).  This manual has charts showing
relative load distribution for various configurations and post to rail
stiffness ratios. Also "Pipe Railing Manual" by NAAMM (National Association
of Architectural Metal Manufacturers - web page http://www.naamm.org)
