If you run the numbers on the concrete and the bolt with a moment arm equal
to the base plate thickness plus the grout bed, the anchor bolt can not
resist much lateral load.  This will limit the number of times you can dump
shear into the anchor bolts.  Often times the shear will be in combination
with moment and tension if it is at a braced frame.  The anchor bolts can't
take much.
 
All other cases should use a method to avoid dumping shear in the anchor
bolts such as the method 2 below or shear lugs or shear post or recessing
the column base in a grouted pocket.  I believe we have had the
constructability issues covered in past posts.

what are the feelings regarding 1 versus 2 in the light that the AISC
guidelines for the design of baseplates recommends that anchor bolts not be
used for transferance of shear forces.  A little shear is ok, but a lot
needs a lug?

any added thoughts here, just always been curious about this.

	Bill, 

	I have done it 2 different ways. 

	1.  Put shear lugs on the setting template & weld a bar from the
base plate 
to the setting template.  That way the shear never goes through the anchor 
bolts. 

	2.  For smaller shear loads: 
        a. Use the oversized base plate holes (for ease of erection). 
        b.  Provide plate washers 3" x 3" x 1/4" (with the standard 1/16" 
oversize holes) under the head of the anchor bolt. 
        c.  Weld the plate washer to the base plate.

	Another question on standard vs oversized bolt holes - what about
holes for 
anchor bolts in base plates where shear is to be transferred from the base 
plate to the anchor bolt?  While contractors prefer to use oversized holes 
at 
base plates due to construction tolerances, how can you count on shear 
transfer if holes are oversized?  (i.e., with reversible wind or seismic 
loads.)   
  
I normally specify anchor bolts to be placed using a template and use 
standard 
hole sizes (1/16" over bolt size) where shear is to be transferred, but I am
