For finite element analysis there is FElt 

check out: http://www-cse.ucsd.edu/users/atkinson/FElt/felt.html

Perhaps not be as feature packed as some commercial s/w. But it
is good enough to learn finite element analysis.

And of course, if u are feeling adventurous, & wanted to test
your programming skills, it is available in source code under
the GNU Public License.
