As a rule of thumb, heavy hex nuts are long enough to force failure to
take place in the bolt shank, not by stripping. If you're tapping into
low strength steel instead of using a nut, simply proportion the
available strength to the length of thread less two thread pitches, since
the end threads are usually imperfect.
