Assuming you are talking about how much the nut has to grab onto the thread,
a rule of thumb would be to have at least 1
diameter of thread sticking out past the nut. I generally call for 2 bolt
diameters of thread from the underside of the washer, giving a bit of
what length of thread is required to develop the full tension of a grade 5
bolt (3/8" diam specifically).
is this a simple rule of thumb or must one figure the total shear plane
area, etc etc?
