Actually, I think it's the other way 'round.

Wal-Mart and other retailers have given the "lofty" sounding title of
"Associate" to those who were once simply "sales clerks," "stock-boys," and
"janitors."

This fits more in line with the earlier mention of "garbage men" as
"sanitation engineers."
