Re: Stress in masonry flying buttress

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]

In a chapter on Structural Experimentation in High Gothic Architecture, in
his book, "Light Wind and Structure", Robert Mark, Professor of Architecture
at Princeton, discusses photoelastic modeling. A photo of a photoelastic
model of a cross section of a Gothic Cathedral, including flying buttresses
shows that the stress distribution in the flying buttresses is not uniform.

He refers to "Experiments in Gothic Structure" by R. Mark, MIT Press, 1982;
also to a Scientific American article, November 1984.
