For interest: September 15, 6 pmThe Pennsylvania EMA US&R Team was deployed for Hurricane Floyd as of 6 pm last night. We are currently stationed near Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina, where landfall is expected at midnight tonight. At the evening briefing, we were informed that peak sustained winds are likely to reach or exceed 85 mph. Cell phones are no longer functioning and evacuations are evident on the highways. There are also at least 21 million phone customers out of order along the coast. There was a reported tornado touchdown somewhere along the Carolina coastline at 1 pm. At this time (7:15 pm) rain has been steady for 6 hours and wind has been increasing, although it is not yet strong. We are expecting potential sustained power outages and general loss of phone contact. There is scheduled a helicopter reconnaissance of damage some time in the morning after peak winds have passed. Provided that the Internet connection remains available I will post further messages as information and activity progresses.
