On Tuesday, August 18, 1999, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey, near
Ismit, an industrial city of about 1 million people. The earthquake lasted
45 seconds and was felt over thousands of square miles of Turkey's most
densely populated regions. Taiwan also experienced a 7.6 magnitude earthquake
on September 21, 1999.

Exponent Failure Analysis Associates sent a reconnaissance team of engineers
to both countries to study the nature and extent of damage to structures and
industrial facilities. Highlights from these trips will be presented.
