Program dinner meeting to be held: November 9th

Subject: RECENT DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKES

Speaker: Lisa Shusto, Exponent Failure Analysis Associates

On August 18, 1999, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey. The
earthquake lasted 45 seconds and was felt over thousands of square miles
including many densely populated regions.  Then on September 21 a 7.6
magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan causing significant damage.

Exponent Failure Analysis Associates sent reconnaissance teams of engineers
to both countries to assist in studying the nature and extent of damage to
structures and industrial facilities. Highlights from these reconnaissance
trips will be discussed.
