RE: Grade 8 bolts in place of A325 bolts

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]
My understanding is that a Grade 5 is about equivalent to a 325, and
that a Grade 8 is more equivalent to a 490. That has always been a rule
of thumb. I looked in a book that we have called "Fastener Standards",
6th Ed., by the Industrial Fasteners Institute. This reference has a
Table called "Mechanical Requirements for Carbon Steel Externally
Threaded Fasteners...it gives the following information:

SAE Gr. 5	1/4" to 1"		Proof Load Stress = 85 ksi;
Yield Strength (min) = 82 ksi; Tensile Strength (min) = 120 ksi
SAE Gr. 5	1-1/8" to 1-1/2"		Proof Load Stress = 74
ksi; Yield Strength (min) = 81 ksi; Tensile Strength (min) = 105 ksi
A325		1/2" to 1"		Proof Load Stress = 85 ksi;
Yield Strength (min) = 92 ksi; Tensile Strength (min) = 120 ksi
A325		1-1/8" to 1-1/2"		Proof Load Stress = 74
ksi; Yield Strength (min) = 81 ksi; Tensile Strength (min) = 105 ksi

SAE Gr. 8	1/4" to 1-1/2"		Proof Load Stress = 120 ksi;
Yield Strength (min) = 130 ksi; Tensile Strength (min) = 150 ksi
A490		1/2" to 1-1/2"		Proof Load Stress = 120 ksi;
Yield Strength (min) = 130 ksi; Tensile Strength (min) = 150 ksi (170
ksi, max)

I believe I copied all the numbers correctly, but somebody might double
check me.  Hope this helped.
