I've reinforced wood trusses by adding two steel tension rods, one each side, 
centered on the bottom chord.  The new connections at each end of the truss 
attached the rods to the steel heel plate.  The new connection assembly was a 
welded plate holddown (an HD, not an HDA) welded to a steel plate that 
engaged the bolts that connected the bottom chord to the heel plate. 

When the truss repair is complete, the truss can be lifted off its temporary 
shoring members by tightening the nuts that engage the holddowns.
