Unfortunately, it is a one-way door unless you make the return very quickly, 
within about one year.  Anything more and you:

Loose experience in structural design of buildings and bridges.
"Forget" procedures and techniques.
Have to relearn codes.

If the person has not received his/her P.E. prior to becoming a "test 
engineer," passing the tests becomes that more difficult.

But, that is the decision that you have to make.  You might want to use some 
of your vacation time to try out the position on a trial basis, with both 
your current employer and your possible future employer knowing what you are 
doing.
