The most current U.S. Standard is ASCE 19-96 "Structural Applications of
Steel Cables for Buildings."  This is available from ASCE Publications
Department.

For the lengths you describe, I would not use rods - handling is
difficult, and wind-induced oscillations could cause severe fatigue
problems at connections.
