I used to love to read collections of Asimov's essays when I was in high
school. Learned a lot from the man.
 
Another good essayist of a scientific/engineering bent was Larry Niven. I'll
never forget "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex" wherein he "proved" that a
marriage between Kal-El (a.k.a. Clark Kent, a.k.a. Superman) and Lois Lane
was NOT a wise idea!

isaac asimov wrote an interesting essay "The Days of Our Years" on evolution
and creation of calendars that is wonderful reading.
