I had always assumed the use of "B.C.E." and "C.E." were used simply as a
disconnect between Christianity and the calendar. Many scientists are not
Christian, and don't like the implications of "A.D."

Many historians and commentators prefer B.C.E. and C.E. (for
"before common era" and "common era") to B.C. and A.D. since Jesus
Christ was probably born between 2 B.C.E. and 4 B.C.E. Again, a
minor point, but more accurate.
