The use of "after death" arose not as a protestant concept, but as an English
language concept. Very few English speakers understand Latin sufficiently to
make much sense of the original meaning. Since A.D. was commonly used by
English speakers, and a reasonable two word phrase could be created in English
to explain its meaning, "after death" has become a common interpretation of the
meaning of A.D. It is not, however, the original meaning.
