The AISC steel manuals indicate the dimension "grip" for channel shapes.
How is this dimension used? Is this a maximum value or a minimum value? If
the grip is not a maximum or minimum value, wouldn't it be more practical to
indicate the gauge in the tables?
The reason I ask is because I am detailing a bolted connection to a channel
flange. Is it typical to show the gauge or the grip required in this case?
