Although let the record show that at least in the early part of the
twentieth century, "nigger" was the name of the color, a kind of "off
black".

This material is made from shredded sugarcane stalks and was used on many
residences heah in the deep South.  I always heard it referred to as "nigger
board".  Pieces of this material were used to start the early morning
warming fires at a job site.  It has some insulating value but very little
shear value.
