resource for misc. information like this is the "machinery's handbook" published
by the industrial press. its about $75, adn now comes on cdrom too. get it
from an industrial supply house like enco or j & l. its also a good
source for dimensions and cuts of things not in the steel manual.
is spec'd for 1/2", in types 1,2 & 3. i would stay away from SAE Grade 5.
better to use Grade 8. in general the sae fasteners are not as quality
controlled as structural bolts, IMHO the small premium for grade 8 is worth
it. grade 8 is about equal to 490. its a medium-carbon
