About the Seminar:
Mason Walters * Concepts and Applicability
Mason Walters, Principal with Forell/Elsesser Engineers, will present the concept of seismic isolation using intuitive sketches and charts rather than complex mathematical derivations. He will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using base isolation, and how to determine whether a structure is a good candidate for base isolation. He will also list the different steps in designing a base isolated structure, and offer practical tips from his experience.
Farzad Naeim * 1997 UBC Provisions
Farzad Naeim is the Director of Research and Development at John A. Martin & Associates in Los Angeles. He has recently co-authored a book titled *Design of Seismic Isolated Structures * From Theory to Practice* with Professor James Kelly of UC Berkeley. Farzad will present a step-by-step example of using the 1997 UBC provisions for base isolation.
