In the steel joist industry, where we spend a great deal of time and
money in an effort to save an ounce, effective lengths are from panel
point to panel point for longspan joists and joist girders.  Longspans
with a uniformly loaded top chord use k=0.75, but girders with no
significant loading between panel points use k=1.0.  In your case I
