I do believe that it depends on the job you are working on.  If you are
required to follow the ASME guidelines, then there are specific requirements
to meet code. Weld procedure certification, welder certification, tensile
strength testing, liquid penetration tests and x-ray all may be required.
For Example, QW 193.1 Required Tests, states that 5 stud weld tests are
required to qualify each stud-welding operator.

Some contracts require that the welding code be followed to the letter,
which would mean a written welding procedure is drafted, and then certified
through lab testing, and finally each welder is tested and issued a
certification that allows them to weld the specific weld procedure.  This
certification is a series of test welds on a given size and type of pipe.
Typically each type of pipe has different weld procedures.  For example, we
are constructing a plant with hastalloy, stainless steel, and carbon steel.
We have different procedures for each type.  Also, we have different
procedures based on pipe diameter.

I hope this is a start in the right direction.

I would like to know what to specify for
inspecting/testing welds for an industrial building
project.  I have an older copy of Masterspec that says
that AISC and AWS do not make any specific
recommendations regarding the frequency of inspection
or method of testing for welded connections.  Does
anyone know if this is still the case.  Is there any
kind of rules of thumb out there?  Someone told me to
do the following:
1. visually inspect all welds
2. magnetic particle inspection of about 10% of field
applied fillet welds (do more testing if problems are
found)
3. ultrasonic inspection of all full penetration field
welds. (is this excessive?)
Does this make sense?  Is this too much or too little?
 Shouldn't there be some testing of shop full pen
welds too?
