The HSS Connections Manual provides section properties based on a
presumption of minimum wall thickness based on maximum tolerance permitted
by ASTM, so the section properties are all lower than what's shown for tube
sections of the same nominal dimensions in the AISC Steel Construction
Manuals. It's definitely a separate publication and belongs on your shelf.
Connection methodology outlined in this manual looks very similar to what
you have seen in the past in AWS D1.1.
The reason the lower section properties are used is that the mills have such
good quality control they can easily manufacture consistent sections using
the lowest permissible weight, so they do.

Subject: HSS connection manual
Does the HSS connection manual include tables of additional HSS sections
not found in the steel manual, or is this a separate publication? I've
seen reference on the list of a "black book" for HSS, and I was
wondering if these are two different publications.
