Go back to school or read the ENTIRE code.
Although I will not use GWB as a shear resisting material, there are provisions for its use in the code. Check out Table 25-I in Volume 1. For 5/8" GWB (yes, unblocked!) with 6d cooler or wallboard nails at 7" o.c., the capacity is 115/2=62.5 PLF (use only 50% of the tablulated capacity in seismic zones 3 and 4).
Sooo...when you say "improper", you should really clarify that this is possibly not your "preference" instead of insinuating that this material is not allowed by Code. That's what I do. I mention to my architectural clients that, although GWB and stucco is allowed by Code to be a shear resisting material, I will not use it as such.
I just wanted to mention this before your architect embarrasses you.

I saw an interesting structural note on a set of drawings:

Lateral stability:
This building utilizes the gypsum wallboard for lateral stability. All interior wall faces are to be finished with a minimum of 5/8" thick...(A couple of sentences later in the note)...No blocking is required!

I thought it was morbidly humorous. One that engineer had  a note that a 3 story wood framed building's lateral stability was based on G.W.B.. Second the exclamation point in the "No blocking is required!" statement. Like they are used car sales people advertising they use the absolute minimum. The architect gave it to us as a sample structural framing, I am starting to wonder if the architect did it himself. Needless to say on the next occasion we speak to him will clarify that G.W.B. is an improper structural sheathing material.

A clear example of an engineer that needs to go back to school. :-)
