Actually, what you have been describing sounds more like a "plinth", which is a
square block serving as the base of a column.  A "pilaster" is a largely
ornamental column which is set into a wall.  Traditionally (we're talking old
Greek here) it was defined as projected one-third or less of it's width from the
wall.
