I believe you need to apply wind and seismic forces per your geographical
area (per Code). These will be carried usually by the exterior walls in
shear. If the building is large and the forces turn out to be too large
to be carried to the exterior walls or if the roof sheathing is not
strong enough, you need to carry the lateral loads down to interior shear
walls in each direction. You may not be able to remove nearly as many
interior walls as desired. How large is the building? Is it one story or
two? What kind of roof diaphragm? What kind of exterior walls?
