RE: AISI 1040 & 1045

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]
As you can see from the web listing, you're talking about pretty versatile
materials, but I wouldn't call either one "alloys".

A quick summary:

AISI 1040 is a plain carbon steel with 0.37 to 0.44 %C, 0.60 to 0.90 %Mn,
0.040 maximum %P, and 0.05 maximum %S.
AISI 1045 has 0.43 to 0.50 %C.

Yield and tensile strength will vary (as-rolled, normalized, annealed, or
quenched and tempered). e.g., AISI 1040 yield is 60, 54.25, 51.25, and up
to 86 ksi, respectively and tensile is 90, 85.5,75.25, and up to 113 ksi,
respectively.

Calculate the CE to evaluate welding per AWS. Note that the welding will
affect any heat treatment.
