Re: Seismic design of shear wall

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]
As an "old grey beard, which I am" I wish to interject some reality into
this discussion. The UBC between 1955 and 1973 was silent on this matter.
The 1973 Code introduced the concept of a factor of 2 for the design of
shear walls. This was modified to 1.5 in the 1976 Code and remained that
way through the 1982 Code. The 1985 Code took a different approach and as
far as I could tell, the factor disappeared until it's re-introduction inthe
1991 Code and remains in the present Code. Perhaps someone from the Masonry
Institute can clarify this matter for us.
