RE: Square timber members as beams

No worries about using square section for beams.  Reference the ANSI/AF&PA
1997-NDS for the appropriate allowable design values.  You may want to see
Appendix F, section F.1.2 of the above reference if long-term deflections
are a concern.

If you are feeling spunky, the AF&PA/ASCE 16-95, Standard for Load and
Resistance Factor Design for Engineered Wood Construction is also available.
