Re: Building Codes used prior to 1927?

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]
Up until the late 70's, local Building Codes that deviated from the UBC were
common in California. Try to determine which agency had jurisdiction at the
time of original construction and then search their records to find if a
City or County Building Code was in effect at that time. Building
Departments and older established structural engineering firms sometimes
have an archive of their older codes and their adoption dates that you may
be able to access. In many cases, the provisions in the UBC were not
relevant since they were not recognized as law by local governments, nor did
they necessarily reflect the local standards of practice which varied much
more than now. The notion of uniform codes is a relatively modern concept.
